How to play Tic Tac Toe
Play the familiar three-in-a-row game against a computer opponent. You place X and move first; the computer plays O and searches for the best response. Because it plays optimally, a well-defended draw is the result to aim for.
The rules
- Place an X in any empty square on the 3 × 3 board.
- Wait for the computer to place O, then choose your next move.
- A row, column or diagonal of three matching marks ends the game. A full board without a line is a draw.
Controls
Click or tap an empty square. Occupied squares and the board during the computer’s turn cannot accept a move.
How scoring works
The scoring system assigns 50 points to a draw, 0 to a loss and 100 to a win. This computer plays optimally, so you should expect a draw at best.
Tips for your next round
- Block an immediate threat before starting a new line of your own.
- Watch for forks, where one move creates two possible winning lines. The center and corners can help you defend against them.
Can two people play on the same device?
This version is single-player against the computer. There is no local two-player or online multiplayer mode.
Why does the computer keep drawing?
Tic Tac Toe can be drawn with correct play, and this opponent checks the possible continuations. Securing a draw means you avoided a losing move.
