How to play Nonogram
Nonogram is a grid puzzle where number clues describe groups of filled squares. A clue of 3, 1 means a run of three filled squares followed by a separate single square, with at least one empty square between the groups. Combine row and column clues to find the complete pattern.
The rules
- Read each line’s clues in order: left to right for a row and top to bottom for a column.
- Fill squares that must belong to a group. Switch to cross mode to mark squares you believe must remain empty.
- Use the crossing clues to resolve the remaining spaces and complete the pattern.
Controls
Choose Fill to toggle a filled square, or Mark empty to toggle a cross. Right-click also marks an empty square. Check marks reports how many existing marks need another look, without revealing the answer.
How scoring works
Fill exactly the cells described by the clues to finish and record your active time in seconds. Crosses on empty cells are optional. The timer pauses when the game is paused or the tab is hidden, and each difficulty has its own personal best.
Tips for your next round
- Look for large groups that overlap wherever they could fit. Their shared squares must be filled even before you know the exact starting position.
- After completing a group, mark its required separating space. Those empty squares can narrow the possibilities in the crossing lines.
- Your unfinished round is saved in this browser. Return to the same game, mode, and difficulty to continue. A daily challenge uses the UTC date; clearing browser data removes saved rounds.
Do different groups need a gap?
Yes. Groups in the same row or column must have at least one empty square between them. Extra empty squares may also appear before, after or between the groups.
What does an empty-line clue mean?
A line with no filled groups stays entirely empty. The 5 × 5 and 8 × 8 puzzles in this version are checked for a single solution.
